Chicken Katsu is a yummy juicy and crispy Japanese style fried chicken pieces with Katsu meaning cutlet, it is crispy on the outside brought about by the breadcrumbs and the juiciness inside comes from the soft meat inside.

Chicken Katsu goes well with the tangy katsu, sweet and savory sauce, which is smoky and very flavorful. It is creamy and goes well with pickled vegetables or Japanese potato salad for a creamy, mild version.

Ingredients For Making Chicken Katsu

  • 4 chicken breasts
  • 1 tsp. salt or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. white pepper
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 cups breadcrumbs
  • 500 ml cooking oil

For Katsu Sauce

  • 3 tbsp. ketchup
  • 1 tsp. soy sauce
  • 1 tsp. Oyster sauce
  • 2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. soy sauce

How To Prepare Chicken Katsu

  1. Cut the chicken slices into thin cutlets, then beat the eggs in a small mixing bowl.
  2. Pound the chicken cutlets to them of equal sizes using a meat mallet.
  3. Season with pepper and salt and then coat the chicken pieces with flour and then remove the excess flour. Dip the pieces into the beaten eggs and press firmly into the breadcrumbs until the pieces are fully coated.
  4. Put a sauce pan on medium heat and let the oil heat until hot, dip the chicken pieces into the oil and fry for 4 to 5 minutes per side until the chicken is golden brown and crispy. Put on a plate on absorbent paper to drain the excess oil.
  5. To make the Katsu sauce, take a mixing bowl, add the ketchup, soy sauce, oyster sauce, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar, whisk together until well combined.
  6. Drizzle the chicken with the katsu sauce or serve with it on the side, it goes well with brown rice or any other side dish of your choice.
