French onion dip or California dip is an American dip typically made with a base of sour cream and flavored with minced onion, and usually served with potato chips as chips and dip.
What is the difference between Onion dip and French Onion Dip? The difference is that French onion dip is typically made with French onion soup mix, a mixture of dried onions and beef bouillon. Onion dip is made with only onions.
What does it taste like? The perfect blend of onions, salt and sour cream flavors. It has a soft and creamy texture with a sweet natural flavor from the caramelized onions.
What you will need
In order to make this recipe you will need:
- Onions – the main ingredient of this recipe
- Sour cream and Mayonnaise – serves as the dip base
- Spice – for this recipe you will need garlic powder and onion powder to add flavor.
Ingredients
- 2 onions diced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 3 tbsp of mayonnaise
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
Instructions
- Melt the butter in a fry pan over medium heat.
- Add the onions, salt, onion powder and garlic powder. Cook for 5 minutes while stirring. Then reduce the heat to medium low and cook for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. The onions should be sweet and golden. Remove from stove and allow to cool.
- Add the caramelized onions into the sour cream and mayonnaise in a bowl and mix until combined. Refrigerate at least 2 hours!
- Serve and enjoy.
