What is bubble tea smoothie and what is it made of?
Bubble tea smoothie which is also known as boba smoothie is a smoothie variation that consists of tapioca pearls, milk and frozen fruit.
Bubble tea which originates from Taiwan is a drink that consists of brewed tea, milk, fruit and served with tapioca pearls which also known as boba at the bottom of the drink.
Boba pearls or tapioca is a chewy ball shaped starch made from cassava and is usually dark in color. Boba pearls do not have a distinct taste on their own but are usually soaked in chocolate or sweet syrup to make them sweet and prevent them from sticking to each other.
This bubble tea smoothie has numerous variations and you can customize it to your liking.
How to make boba pearls
Bring 3 cups of water[depending on the amount of boba but make sure the water fully covers the tapioca pearls completely] to a boil and add in the tapioca pearls and let it boil in the water until the pearls float on the top. Reduce the heat and cover with a lid and let it it cook for 5 minutes and the turn of the heat and drain over a sieve.

- Frozen fruit of your choice: you can either use blueberries, banana, strawberries, mangoes or any other fruit of choice.
- Milk or water: Milk goes best with this smoothie recipe because it makes it creamy in texture but you can also use water if you do not want to use milk.
- Honey: to sweeten the smoothie. You can also use agave or maple syrup
- Ice – optional but adds a thick texture and provides for a cooling effect.
- Other add-ons according to liking: you can add in matcha, protein powder or chia seeds etc.
How to make bubble tea smoothie
- Cook boba pearls according to package instructions.
- Add all the ingredients minus the boba pearls into a high speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy.
- Put the cooked boba pearls in a glass and pour in the smoothie.
- Enjoy.
How to store
Place in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to a day.
