What you will need
- Chicken – this recipe can not be honey chilli chicken without the chicken right? I usually prefer using drumsticks for this but this time I will be using chicken breasts that have been thinly cut into uniform strips.
- Marinade for the chicken – to marinate the chicken you will need garlic , soy sauce and black pepper.
- Crispy Coating – to make the coating you will need an egg in one bowl and corn starch in another.
- Chilli sauce – to add the spicy kick.
- Honey – To add sweetness.
Kitchen equipment you will need
Ingredients
- Thinly sliced chicken breasts
- Cornstarch
- Egg
- Garlic paste
- Soy sauce
- Vinegar
- Honey
- Hot sauce
- Ketchup
- Salt to taste
- Oil for frying
Honey Chilli Chicken:
- ▢1/2 cup cornstarch
- ▢1 tbsp garlic paste
- ▢1 tbsp Soy Sauce
- ▢1 tbsp salt
- ▢1 cup chicken breast thinly cut into strips
- ▢1 tbsp vinegar
- ▢1 egg
- ▢2 tbsp ketchup
- ▢2 tbsp honey
- ▢2 tbsp chilli sauce
To serve:
- Green Onions
How to make honey chilli chicken
- Slice your chicken breasts into thin strips.
- In a clean bowl, combine the marinade ingredients; soy sauce, salt, garlic paste and vinegar then add the thinly sliced chicken breasts into this marinade for 20 minutes.
- Place oil in a pan and let it get hot over medium heat while doing the next steps
- Take 2 small bowls and in one bowl crack an egg and in the other add the corn starch. Coat the chicken pieces in the egg then the corn starch and place on a plate. If you want an extra crispy coating repeat this process twice.
- By this time your oil should be hot [350 degrees], if you want to test it, take a toothpick and slightly dip it in the oil. If small bubbles start sizzling from the point of contact of the contact of the toothpick and oil, you can go ahead and add the chicken strips.
- Let the chicken fry for about 3 minutes until slightly golden brown. Remember that the thinly cut chicken strips will cook faster. If you added a lot of the chicken into the oil at once, then expect it to cook for a bit longer.
- In a bowl, combine the honey and chilli sauce mixture and coat the chicken in it.
- Serve with finely chopped green onions.
Substitutions for this recipe
- Chicken breasts: You can use thighs instead of chicken breasts. Pork and beef can also be used.
- Add red chilli flakes- you can add chilli flakes to the sauce or a garnish if you like extremely spicy food.
- Use rice flour instead of cornstarch: You can use rice flour instead of cornstarch if you do not have it. You can also use regular flour.
- Maple syrup: You can substitute honey with the same amount of maple syrup.
- Agave– this can also be used as a substitute for honey.
Variations:
- Saute the chilli sauce – You can saute the chilli sauce in a separate pan by adding the honey, tomato sauce, chilli sauce, garlic and soy sauce and adding the fried the chicken in this mixture to incorporate it into the fried chicken.
- Make it vegan : use tofu instead of chicken to make this recipe vegar
- Chicken swaps: Use pork, shrimp or beef in place of chicken.
- Vegetables: You can use Stir fry vegetables like bell peppers.
